Eugene “Gene” Curran Kelly (August 23, 1912 - February 2, 1996)
Happy 100th, Gene.
What a nice tribute, Courtney!
remember what that dancer said on the Pirate commentary “Gene was an intensely sexual person”…ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
UGH
STOP
Mmmmm.
Did he realize that he was being sensual when he did these little things? Might have been his little way to get sexy things into these post-code movies.
First time I saw this scene, I just couldn’t help but stare at his hand on the mouthpiece. I have never wanted to be an inanimate object so badly in my LIFE.
And I’d almost guarantee he knew—remember he did the choreography for “Voodoo”—we all know what happened to THAT little sucker…
I’ve not watched the commentary. Maybe I should.
I wouldn’t believe for one minute Gene didn’t know what he was doing as he stroked the phone.
Filming “Voodoo” for The Pirate, a number so steamy that Louis B. Mayer had the print burned. Dammit.
I could just kick Mayer for doing that.

Generally I do not condone smoking but this is rather provocative Mr. Kelly
The only man I’d allow to blow cigarette smoke in my face.

Gene looks like he means business.

Gene Kelly in THE PIRATE
His face is adorable. I’m considering it for my new icon…should I?Absolutely!
Why do those women have such disapproving looks on their faces?
